Ever since I've become a Hikaru No Go obsessed freak about a month and a half ago, I've probably read like 80% of the fanfics in the fandom's history of existence, ever. There have been some amazing fics that I've come across, and this one stood out to me particularly. It wasn't entirely an AU fic, since it took place very much so in the canon world, but it was a very eerie, heart-wrenching, and believable rendition of what could happen 20 years from the canon after Hikaru's tragic death.
The fic basically uses a unique way of storytelling through an interview-like format, so the majority of the writing is actually dialogue. Yet, it just flowed so well and whatever narrative description that was in between the dialogue just made the story sewn together so much better. As a little more background, a reporter goes around and speaks to characters (who were unnamed to begin with, but one can tell who they are based on the background and dialogue), as they reflect on Akira's reaction to Hikaru's death and how he may or may not have created an AI that imitates Hikaru's style of play. Ok, enough of my ranting, go read it!!
